First Outdoor Internet Pay Phone To Debut In Midtown Manhattan
(New York-AP, February 10, 2002) — A new twist on the pay phone may soon have New Yorkers checking their e-mail on street corners for $.25 cents a minute.

The first outdoor internet-access terminal was unveiled in midtown Manhattan on Sunday.

The device provides internet access and e-mail service at a cost of $1 for four minutes. It also doubles as a traditional pay phone.

The unit includes a screen, keyboard, and camera designed to be resistant to weather and vandalism. The camera allows people to take pictures of themselves and send them via e-mail.

As a telephone, the unit allows users to call anywhere in the world for $.25 cents a minute.

The phone is scheduled to be installed Sunday on the corner of Fifth Avenue and West 46th Street.

Its owner, pay phone company TCC Teleplex, said after a 30-day trial period it would install more of the phones in other locations.
